What a Webhook Is

A webhook is a special URL that posts messages into one Discord channel. Anything that can send a web request to that URL can post a message there, without a bot account and without logging in. Services use webhooks to post alerts, new videos, game updates or build results, and server owners use them to post announcements with a custom name and avatar. Webhooks can only post. They can't read messages, see members or change settings.

Creating a Webhook

You need the Manage Webhooks permission. Open the channel's settings by clicking the gear next to its name, choose Integrations, then Webhooks, and click New Webhook. Discord creates one with a default name and avatar; change them to something members will recognize, such as your server's name and logo. Click Copy Webhook URL to copy the URL. It looks like https://discord.com/api/webhooks/ followed by a long number and a long code.

Treat the URL Like a Password

Anyone who has the webhook URL can post in that channel, under the webhook's name, as often as Discord allows. Never paste it into a public channel, a screenshot or a shared document. If a URL leaks, open the webhook in channel settings and delete it, then create a new one. Deleting the webhook immediately stops the old URL from working. It is good practice to name webhooks after where they are used, so you know which one to delete if something goes wrong.

Posting Text and Images

A webhook message can contain text up to 2,000 characters with all of Discord's Markdown formatting, plus attachments such as images and GIFs. Mentions in webhook messages can ping people, so tools that post through webhooks should turn off pings unless you really mean them; Boxtype does this for every post. In Boxtype, add a webhook in Settings โ†’ Discord Channels. The URL is checked with Discord and saved only on your device. After that, a Post to channel button appears under the converter, colored text, formatter, text art and GIF maker, so you can post results straight to that channel.

Rate Limits

Discord limits how fast a webhook can post. If something sends too many messages in a short time, Discord replies with a "slow down" error and a number of seconds to wait. Wait that long and try again. Spreading posts out also keeps the channel readable for members.

Good Uses for Webhooks

Webhooks are great for announcements that should look official: a weekly schedule posted under your server's name, a formatted rules update, or a celebration GIF when your server hits a milestone. They are also handy for staff-only channels where tools post logs or alerts. They aren't a replacement for a bot. If you need commands, reactions or replies, you need a bot; if you only need to post, a webhook is simpler and safer.

Checking Your Webhooks

Every few months, open each channel's Integrations page and remove webhooks you no longer use. Old webhooks are easy to forget, and an unused URL that still works is an unnecessary risk. Server Settings โ†’ Integrations also lists every webhook in the server in one place.

Webhook Names and Avatars

Each webhook has its own name and avatar, and every message it posts shows them. Choose ones that tell members where the message comes from: "Server News" with your logo for announcements, or "Build Bot" with a robot icon for automated alerts. Discord marks webhook messages with a small tag next to the name, so members can tell them apart from messages written by people.

Editing and Deleting Webhook Messages

Messages posted by a webhook can be deleted by anyone with the Manage Messages permission in that channel, just like normal messages. Tools that keep the message's ID can also edit what they posted, which is how some bots update a status message instead of posting a new one. If you post the wrong thing through a webhook, delete it like any other message.
