About Boxtype
What is Boxtype?
Boxtype is a free toolkit for making Discord messages and servers stand out. It has five tools:
Convert โ€” turns text into emoji letters (๐Ÿ‡ญ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ) and shortcodes for messages and reactions, with Regional, Alt Style, Badges, Mixed and Reactions styles.
Fonts โ€” restyles text into Unicode letters like ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐, ๐“ˆ๐’ธ๐“‡๐’พ๐“…๐“‰ and ๐Ÿ…ฑ๐Ÿ…พ๐Ÿ†‡ for names, bios and messages.
Colored Text โ€” writes ANSI code blocks so messages show red, green, blue and other colors on Discord desktop.
Animated GIF โ€” animates words with effects like wave, bounce and rainbow, sized for avatars, banners and welcome cards.
Server Emoji Maker โ€” makes custom letter emoji and stickers, or turns an image into one, sized to Discord's limits and ready to upload.
There are also smaller helpers for timestamps, message formatting and text art banners on the All Tools page.
Everything runs on your device: your text, images and GIFs are never uploaded. New to any of this? Start with the Discord Tips & Guides.
FAQ
Is Boxtype free?
Yes. Every tool is free to use without an account: the converter, fonts, colored text, the GIF maker and the server emoji maker. Boxtype is supported by ads. Boxtype Pro is an optional one-time purchase that unlocks extra effects, backgrounds, sizes and image tools, and removes the boxtype.net mark from GIFs. There is no subscription.
Do I need an account?
No. An account is only needed to buy or restore Boxtype Pro, so your purchase follows you between the website and the Android app. You can sign in with Google, Discord or an email link, and delete your account at any time from Settings.
Are my GIFs and images uploaded anywhere?
No. GIFs, emoji and stickers are drawn and encoded on your device. Photos you add as a background or image never leave your phone or browser.
Why do my regional letters sometimes turn into country flags?
Discord merges adjacent regional indicator letters into flag emoji when they form a valid country code (like ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ for US or ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง for GB). To prevent this, use the Space separator in Boxtype โ€” the space between letters stops Discord from combining them.
Why can't I use a duplicate letter as a reaction?
Each unique emoji can only appear once per message as a reaction. If your word has a repeated letter (like "HELLO" with two L's), the second reaction just adds to the count of the first. Use the Reactions style to swap repeats for look-alikes, or make a custom letter set with the Server Emoji Maker, which gives every repeat its own emoji.
What is the character limit?
Discord messages have a 2,000 character limit. Emoji shortcodes are much longer than the emoji themselves โ€” for example, :regional_indicator_a: is 22 characters. Boxtype shows a live character count so you can see when you're approaching the limit.
Does Boxtype work on mobile Discord?
Yes. The shortcodes, fonts and GIFs Boxtype makes work the same on desktop, browser, iOS and Android. The one exception is colored text: Discord's mobile apps show ANSI code blocks without colors. Boxtype itself works in any phone browser at boxtype.net.
What is the difference between the emoji styles?
Regional uses the letter indicators (๐Ÿ‡ฆโ€“๐Ÿ‡ฟ) supported by all Discord clients. Alt Style uses boxed letter emoji (๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธ, ๐Ÿ…ฑ๏ธ, etc.) where they exist. Badges converts whole words like COOL, FREE and NEW into ๐Ÿ†’, ๐Ÿ†“ and ๐Ÿ†•. Mixed randomly blends regional and look-alike letters โ€” tap Shuffle for a new look. Reactions keeps every emoji unique so a word can be spelled out as reactions.
How does Word Emoji work?
Word Emoji swaps whole words for a matching emoji, so "I love pizza" becomes ๐Ÿ‡ฎ โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ•. Common covers about 300 everyday words and slang like gg and lol; All matches any word with an emoji. Even with it off, a suggestion pops up under the text box when you type a word that has an emoji: tap the emoji to swap just that word, or Aa to keep its letters. Swapped words are pasted as the emoji itself, which Discord shows the same way in messages and reactions.
Can I post animated emoji without Nitro?
Animated custom emoji are a Nitro feature in Discord: everyone can see them, but only Nitro members can post them. Still emoji work for everyone in the server that owns them. The Server Emoji Maker can export the same set as still PNGs or animated GIFs.
Where are my recent conversions saved?
Recent conversions and favorites are stored only on your device or in your browser. You can turn history off or clear it in Settings.
