Markdown
**Game night is on Friday!** **Bring snacks.**
The symbols, for reference
**bold** *italic* __underline__ ~~strike~~ ||spoiler|| `code` # Header ## Smaller ### Smallest -# subtext > quote - list 1. list
Headers, subtext and lists only work at the start of a line, which is why the formatter adds them to every line for you.

About the Discord Message Formatter

Discord formats messages with Markdown: wrap text in symbols such as ** or || and Discord shows it bold or hidden as a spoiler. The Message Formatter lets you pick styles with buttons and copies the finished text with every symbol in the right place, so you don't have to remember them.
It is useful for long announcements, rules and event posts, where a single missing asterisk can break the formatting of everything after it.

How to use it

1
Write your message
Type or paste the text. Each line can have its own block style.
2
Choose styles
Turn on inline styles such as bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, spoiler or inline code, and pick a block style: header, subtext, quote, bullet or numbered list, or code block.
3
Copy and send
The preview shows how Discord will display it. Copy the result and paste it into Discord, or send it straight to a channel webhook you saved in Settings.

Inline styles

Bold uses **two asterisks**, italic uses *one*, underline uses __two underscores__ and strikethrough uses ~~two tildes~~. Spoilers use ||two bars|| and stay hidden until a reader clicks them. Inline code uses `backticks` and shows text in a monospace font without formatting, which is handy for commands. Styles can be combined, for example bold and underlined.

Block styles

Headers start a line with #, ## or ### for three sizes. Subtext starts with -# and shows smaller, muted text, good for footnotes. Quotes start with > and bullet lists with - or *. Numbered lists start with 1. and code blocks wrap lines in three backticks. Block styles must be at the start of a line, which is why the formatter applies them to every line you select.

Writing announcements that read well

Use one header for the title, short paragraphs, and a bullet list for details like date, place and how to join. Bold the one thing people must not miss. Spoilers are great for game and film discussions, and for answers in quiz channels. Keep the whole message under Discord's character limit; the formatter shows the length as you type.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my text showing the asterisks?

The symbols must be paired and touching the text: **bold** works, ** bold ** does not. The formatter places them correctly.

Do headers work everywhere?

Headers, subtext and lists work in messages, but not in channel names or nicknames.

How do I show symbols without formatting?

Put a backslash before the symbol, like \*, or put the text in inline code.

Is there a character limit?

Most accounts can send up to 2,000 characters in a message, and Nitro raises it. Formatting symbols count toward the limit.
