Your Profile Is Everywhere

Your Discord profile follows you into every server and DM. People see your display name next to every message and open your profile when they want to know who you are. A few minutes spent on it makes you easier to recognize and remember.

Username Versus Display Name

Discord accounts have a unique username, used to add friends, and a display name, shown next to your messages. Usernames are lowercase and can only contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Display names are much more flexible: they can include capital letters, spaces, emoji and styled Unicode text. That makes the display name the place for personality. Change it in User Settings โ†’ Profiles.

Styled Text in Your Name

Fancy text such as ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐, ๐“ข๐“ฌ๐“ป๐“ฒ๐“น๐“ฝ or ๊œฑแดแด€สŸสŸ แด„แด€แด˜๊œฑ is made of Unicode characters, so it works in display names, server nicknames and your About Me. Boxtype's Fancy Fonts converts your text into 17 styles you can copy. Use it with care: screen readers may read styled letters strangely, and people searching for your name with normal letters won't find a styled one. A good compromise is styling one part of your name and keeping the main word plain.

Writing an About Me

The About Me section is short, so make every line count. Good About Me sections say what you are into, what servers or games people know you from, and how you like to be contacted. Discord's Markdown works here, so you can use bold text, line breaks and links. Avoid putting personal details like your age, school or location in your profile. It is visible to everyone who shares a server with you.

Custom Status

A custom status appears under your name in the member list. Click your avatar at the bottom left and choose to set a custom status with an emoji and a short line of text, then choose when it clears. It is useful for telling people you are busy, streaming, studying for exams or away for a week.

Different Profiles for Different Servers

Every member can set a server nickname, so you can be known by a different name in your gaming server and your work server. Right-click yourself in the member list, or open the server menu and choose Edit Per-server Profile. Nitro also lets you set a different avatar, banner and bio for each server. Server nicknames are also a good place for styled text, since some servers prefer readable names in general channels.

Avatars and Banners

Everyone can upload an avatar. Use a clear image that still reads as a small circle, because that is how most people will see it. An animated avatar and a profile banner are Nitro features; without Nitro, you can still choose a profile color. Boxtype's GIF Maker has an avatar size with a circle guide if you want animated text as your picture.

Privacy and Safety

Your profile is visible to anyone who shares a server with you, including strangers in large public servers. Keep personal details out of your name, About Me and custom status: no full name, school, workplace, age or location. Check Privacy & Safety in User Settings to control who can send you direct messages and friend requests, especially if you join big community servers.

Pronouns and Profile Details

Discord has a pronouns field in your profile, next to your display name. It is optional, short, and visible wherever your profile is. Some servers also use roles for pronouns, which show up in the member list. Fill in whichever helps people talk to you comfortably, and leave out anything you'd rather not share.

Keep It Up to Date

A profile that mentions last year's game or an old event makes you look inactive. Revisit your About Me and status every few months. If you have a favorite channel, project or stream, link it in your About Me so people who like your messages can find more. Small changes, like a seasonal emoji in your display name, show people you are around.
