How to Use This Cheat Sheet

Discord has a lot of limits, and hitting one usually means an upload that fails or a message that won't send. This page collects the ones people look up most often. Discord changes some limits over time, especially file upload sizes and Nitro perks, so when a number matters, double-check it in Discord's Help Center.

Messages

A message can be up to 2,000 characters. Discord Nitro raises the limit to 4,000. Formatting symbols, emoji shortcodes and links all count toward the limit. Custom emoji count as their full code, like <:name:123456789>, which is why messages full of custom emoji hit the limit sooner than you expect. If a message is too long, split it into two, or attach a text file.

Emoji

Custom emoji files can be up to 256 KB, in PNG, JPG or GIF format. 128 ร— 128 pixels is enough. Names need at least two characters and can use letters, numbers and underscores. Each server has separate static and animated pools: 50 of each without boosts, 100 at Level 1, 150 at Level 2 and 250 at Level 3.

Stickers

Stickers must be exactly 320 ร— 320 pixels and 512 KB or smaller. Use PNG for static stickers and APNG for animated ones. Sticker slots: 5 without boosts, 15 at Level 1, 30 at Level 2 and 60 at Level 3.

Boost Levels

Level 1 needs 2 boosts, Level 2 needs 7 and Level 3 needs 14. Level 1 unlocks an animated server icon and an invite background. Level 2 adds the server banner. Level 3 allows an animated banner and a custom invite link (vanity URL). Each level also adds emoji and sticker slots and better audio quality in voice channels.

Names and Text Fields

Usernames are 2โ€“32 characters of lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Display names and server nicknames can be up to 32 characters and can include emoji and styled text. Channel names can be up to 100 characters, and channel topics up to 1,024 characters.

File Uploads

Free accounts have a per-file upload limit, and Nitro raises it substantially. Discord has changed the free limit more than once, so check the current number in Discord's Help Center. If a file is too big, compress it, shorten a video or GIF, or share a link instead. GIFs from Boxtype's GIF Maker show their size after they are made, so you can pick a smaller size before posting.

Servers

A server can have up to 500 channels, including categories, and up to 250 roles. In practice, servers rarely get near these numbers; if you are close, it is usually a sign the structure needs simplifying rather than more space.

Quick Fixes When You Hit a Limit

Message too long? Split it, move details into a thread, or attach a text file. Emoji rejected? Make it smaller than 256 KB by cutting frames or colors, and check the name uses only letters, numbers and underscores. Sticker rejected? Make sure it is exactly 320 ร— 320 and under 512 KB, and use APNG for animation. Out of emoji slots? Remove emoji nobody uses (Server Settings โ†’ Emoji shows who uploaded each one) or boost the server. File too large to upload? Compress it, or share a link.

Voice and Video

Server owners can set a user limit of up to 99 on each voice channel to keep a session small. Video and screen sharing have their own participant limits, which are lower than voice. Higher boost levels improve voice audio quality. Screen sharing and streaming quality depend on Nitro and boost perks, which Discord adjusts from time to time, so check the current options in Discord's Help Center if quality matters for your event.

Rate Limits

Discord limits how quickly messages can be sent, both for people and for webhooks and bots. Channels can also have slowmode, which makes members wait a set time between messages. If you see a message telling you to slow down, wait the number of seconds shown and try again; repeated attempts don't help. Moderators can set slowmode per channel in its settings to calm a busy conversation.
